THE FOLLY OF EARTHLY RICHES By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." – Matthew 6:19-21

INTRODUCTION

The pursuit of wealth and material possessions has been a central focus for many people throughout history. In today's world, where financial success is often equated with personal worth and security, the temptation to prioritize earthly riches over eternal treasures has never been greater. However, as the Word of God warns, such a pursuit without regard for God leads only to emptiness, destruction, and eternal separation from Him.

Many are so consumed with acquiring wealth that they neglect their spiritual well-being. They build storehouses for themselves, accumulating vast fortunes while ignoring the greater reality of eternity. They live as if this world is their final home, blind to the fact that life is fleeting, and one day, their souls will be required of them. The question is, what happens to all they have gathered when they face death? Does their wealth buy them favor with God? The answer is a resounding no.

This article explores the folly of storing up riches on earth while neglecting the riches of heaven, the dangers of materialism, and the eternal consequences of ignoring God’s call to live for His Kingdom.

THE TEMPORARY NATURE OF EARTHLY WEALTH

"Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle." – Proverbs 23:4-5

One of the greatest deceptions of wealth is the illusion of permanence. Many people work tirelessly, believing that their riches will provide them with lasting security. They take pride in their possessions, investments, and financial status, thinking these will sustain them forever. However, wealth is fragile. Economic downturns, natural disasters, theft, or even death itself can strip a person of all they have accumulated in an instant.

God warns against putting trust in riches, as they are fleeting and unreliable. Instead, He calls His people to place their trust in Him, the One who provides for all needs.

THE ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES OF LOVING MONEY

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." – 1 Timothy 6:10

Those who prioritize wealth above God risk losing their souls. Many fall into the trap of greed, deceit, and corruption in their pursuit of riches. They exploit others, cheat, and compromise their morals, all for financial gain. However, as the scriptures state, wealth gained through sin leads only to destruction.

In the parable of the rich fool, Jesus speaks of a man who hoarded wealth but was not "rich toward God" (Luke 12:16-21). That very night, his life was taken from him, and all his accumulated riches became meaningless. This serves as a stern warning: no amount of wealth can purchase salvation or favor before God.

THE TRUE TREASURE: STORING RICHES IN HEAVEN

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." – Matthew 6:33

Instead of storing up riches on earth, believers are called to store treasures in heaven. This means investing in what is eternal—serving God, helping others, spreading the Gospel, and living in obedience to His Word. True riches are found in a relationship with God, and these can never be taken away.

God desires that His people use their resources wisely for His purposes. When wealth is used to further His Kingdom, support those in need, and advance His work, it gains eternal significance. Unlike earthly wealth, heavenly treasures last forever and yield eternal rewards.

CONCLUSION

God does not condemn wealth itself, but He warns against making it an idol. The true measure of a person’s success is not found in their bank account but in their faithfulness to God. Every believer must examine their heart and ask: Am I living for earthly riches or for the Kingdom of God?
