THE LORD WILL RAISE THE REMNANT By Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
"Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the LORD.
Therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the LORD. “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the LORD. —Jeremiah 23:1–4
Introduction
In an age where wickedness is prevalent and hearts are hardened, the Lord promises to raise a remnant—a faithful few who will stand for righteousness amidst the chaos. These are the people who will reflect God’s glory, walk in His ways, and be a sign of hope to the world.
Though we live in times of rebellion and spiritual decay, the Lord’s plan to restore His people is unwavering. He will gather those who remain faithful, bless them, and raise them as a testimony of His power and grace.
1. God’s Plan to Gather the Remnant
The Lord sees the destruction caused by unfaithful shepherds—leaders who misuse their authority for selfish gain. He promises to bring together His scattered flock, nurture them, and appoint righteous shepherds to guide them.
Key Scripture:
"I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number." —Jeremiah 23:3
Even in a generation consumed by sin, God’s faithful remnant will rise as a beacon of hope. They will walk in truth, receiving the fullness of His life and reflecting it to others.
2. A Call to Return to God
God longs for a close relationship with His people. He desires to dine with them, to share His love, and to restore what has been lost. However, many have been led astray by selfish and deceitful leaders.
Key Scripture:
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me." —Revelation 3:20
The Lord is calling His people back to Him. This is a spiritual invitation to leave the distractions of the world and embrace fellowship with the Almighty.
3. Be a Lifeline of Hope
In times of darkness, we are called to throw a lifeline of hope to those drowning in despair. However, if some refuse this lifeline, we must not be dragged into the same darkness. Instead, we are to keep moving forward, trusting the Lord’s guidance.
Key Scripture:
"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." —Psalm 23:4
God’s faithful remnant will remain steadfast, offering hope while staying firmly rooted in His word.
4. Appreciate the Small Beginnings
The Lord often starts with small beginnings to prepare His people for greater things. The seed of faith may appear insignificant, but it carries the potential to produce abundant fruit.
Key Scripture:
"Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?" —Zechariah 4:10
Never underestimate the power of small beginnings. Instead, be thankful for the little victories and trust that God is working behind the scenes to fulfill His promises.
5. Strength Comes from the Lord
The strength of the remnant is not found in numbers but in their relationship with the Lord. While the world seeks power and fame, God honors those who are humble and dependent on Him.
Key Scripture:
"Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit," says the LORD Almighty. —Zechariah 4:6
True power comes from walking in God’s Spirit and trusting His plan, even when it seems contrary to worldly expectations.
6. The Responsibility of Stewarding God’s Word
When the Word of God dwells among His people, it comes with blessings and accountability. As custodians of His truth, we must hold it with reverence and live according to its principles.
Key Scripture:
"The ark of the LORD remained in the camp of the Philistines, and the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them. He brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors." —1 Samuel 5:6
The Word of God is powerful. To those who honor it, it brings life and blessings, but to those who dishonor it, it brings judgment.
Conclusion
The Lord’s promise to raise a remnant is a reminder of His unwavering faithfulness. He will gather, restore, and empower His people to be a light in the darkness. As part of this remnant, we are called to walk in faith, appreciate small beginnings, and remain steadfast in His Word.
Let us heed His call, embrace His guidance, and trust His plan, knowing that the strength of the remnant is not in their number but in the presence of the Almighty God.
"The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." —Deuteronomy 31:8
To God be the glory!
