NEW ATTACKS, STEADFAST FAITH, AND VICTORY IN JESUS CHRIST By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scriptures

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:11 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

The Christian life requires continuous spiritual vigilance, steadfast faith, and complete dependence upon Jesus Christ. Just as God's mercies are new every morning, believers must recognize the importance of renewing their commitment to Him daily. Yesterday's victory should encourage today's faith, but it should never become an excuse for spiritual carelessness. Every day brings new responsibilities, decisions, and challenges that require prayer, wisdom, and obedience to God's Word.

The Bible warns believers to remain watchful because spiritual opposition is real. However, Christians must not live in constant fear or assume that every difficulty is a direct attack from the devil. Instead, they must remain grounded in Scripture, resist temptation, pursue righteousness, and trust God through every circumstance. Spiritual maturity involves recognizing danger without becoming controlled by fear.

Jesus Christ calls His followers to live by faith rather than by anxiety about what people may do to them. He teaches them to forgive one another, fulfil their responsibilities, remain faithful to their calling, and proclaim the Gospel boldly. He also reminds them that perfection is not found in ideal circumstances but in a life rooted in Him.

This lesson examines the importance of spiritual vigilance, abiding in Christ, walking by faith, fulfilling personal responsibilities, standing firmly in God's purpose, proclaiming the light of the Gospel, and evaluating spiritual maturity by its fruit. Its central message is clear: remain faithful to Jesus Christ, regardless of changing circumstances, and allow His truth to govern your heart, words, and actions.

REMAIN VIGILANT AGAINST SPIRITUAL ATTACKS

“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13 (KJV)

Believers must remain spiritually alert every day. The enemy seeks opportunities to weaken faith, encourage disobedience, create division, and distract God's people from their calling. Temptation may come through pride, anger, unforgiveness, discouragement, deception, or the desire to abandon what is right when obedience becomes difficult.

Spiritual vigilance does not mean living suspiciously or interpreting every disappointment as demonic activity. It means maintaining a disciplined Christian life through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and discernment. A believer who neglects these practices may become vulnerable to temptation and poor decisions.

Paul instructed Christians to put on the whole armour of God, including truth, righteousness, the Gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God (Ephesians 6:13–17). These are not merely religious expressions; they describe a life firmly established in God's truth and equipped to resist evil.

Do not depend exclusively on yesterday's spiritual experiences. Continue seeking the Lord today. Renew your commitment to prayer, examine your heart, and remain faithful to what God has taught you. When discouragement comes, return to His promises. When temptation arises, resist it through obedience to His Word.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 (KJV)

Spiritual victory begins with submission to God. Remain watchful, but do not become fearful. Your confidence rests not in your own strength but in the Lord whom you serve.

FORGIVE ONE ANOTHER AND MAINTAIN UNITY

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)

Unforgiveness is destructive because it allows past injuries to influence present relationships and future decisions. When believers hold on to resentment, they create opportunities for bitterness, suspicion, and division to grow. Communities and churches become weakened when personal grievances are allowed to replace love, truth, and reconciliation.

Jesus Christ commands His followers to forgive because they themselves have received mercy from God. Forgiveness does not mean pretending that wrongdoing never happened, excusing abuse, or abandoning the pursuit of justice. It means refusing to allow hatred and revenge to control the heart. Where reconciliation is possible and safe, believers should pursue peace; where boundaries are necessary, they should be maintained wisely.

The Christian life calls us to place the good of others alongside our own interests. This requires humility, patience, and a willingness to listen rather than always insisting on being right. Unity does not mean that every person must agree on every matter. It means that disagreements are handled with truth, respect, and a commitment to Christ.

“Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” — Ephesians 4:3 (KJV)

Refuse to nurture revenge. Address conflict honestly, repent where you have done wrong, and forgive those who have offended you. Do not allow personal disagreements to destroy the work God has entrusted to His people. Let love, righteousness, and mutual responsibility guide your relationships.

HIDE YOUR LIFE IN JESUS CHRIST

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” — Colossians 3:3 (KJV)

To hide your life in Jesus means to place your identity, hope, and confidence in Him rather than in changing circumstances or human approval. Christ must become the foundation of your decisions, the source of your spiritual strength, and the One whose teachings determine how you live.

Believers cannot control everything that happens to them. Plans may change, opportunities may disappear, and unexpected difficulties may arise. Yet these circumstances do not have to destroy their confidence in God. Their responsibility is to seek His wisdom, remain faithful to His Word, and trust Him with outcomes beyond their control.

Jesus also calls His followers to exercise discernment. He told His disciples to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves (Matthew 10:16). Christian faith is therefore not an invitation to recklessness or naivety. Believers should recognize danger, make responsible decisions, establish appropriate boundaries, and avoid unnecessary conflict while remaining faithful to the truth.

Do not rush into decisions merely because you feel pressured. Pray, seek biblical guidance, and consider wise counsel. When the right course is clear, move forward in obedience. When circumstances remain uncertain, continue trusting God while taking the responsible steps available to you.

“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)

Your life is in God's hands, but this truth does not remove your responsibility to act wisely. Abide in Christ, follow His teaching, and trust Him to sustain you through every season.

LIVE BY FAITH, NOT BY FEAR OF PEOPLE

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)

God has not called believers to live under the constant fear of what other people might do. Fear can cause people to compromise their convictions, abandon responsibilities, remain silent when truth must be spoken, or make decisions designed only to gain human approval.

Faith does not mean that people cannot harm us or that every painful event occurs only with our personal consent. Scripture records faithful servants who suffered persecution, imprisonment, and even death. Their example teaches us that faith is not the guarantee of freedom from suffering; it is confidence in God that remains firm even when suffering occurs.

The believer's security is ultimately found in Christ. Human beings may influence our circumstances, but they do not possess the authority to determine our eternal destiny when we belong to the Lord. Therefore, we must not allow fear to become the governing force in our lives.

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31 (KJV)

This Scripture does not promise that no one will oppose Christians. Rather, it assures believers that opposition cannot separate them from God's love in Christ. They can continue doing what is right even when people misunderstand or reject them.

Examine the fears that influence your decisions. Are you avoiding obedience because you fear criticism? Are you compromising your convictions to secure acceptance? Bring those concerns before God and ask Him for courage and wisdom.

Walk by faith, not by panic. Be careful where caution is necessary, but do not surrender your life to fear. Trust the Lord, act responsibly, and remain faithful to Jesus Christ.

FULFIL THE RESPONSIBILITIES GOD HAS GIVEN YOU

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” — 1 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV)

Every believer has responsibilities before God. These may include caring for family, serving the church, working honestly, leading others, managing resources, or using personal gifts to benefit the community. Faithfulness requires accepting these responsibilities rather than continually shifting the burden onto others.

When people neglect their duties, they often become dissatisfied and blame others for the consequences. They may criticize those who are working while refusing to examine their own conduct. Such attitudes damage relationships, weaken institutions, and obstruct the progress of work that requires cooperation.

God calls His people to be faithful stewards. A steward understands that time, ability, resources, opportunities, and authority must be used responsibly. Leadership is not a privilege to avoid accountability; it is a responsibility to serve with integrity.

“Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

Work faithfully even when no one is watching. Do not measure your contribution solely by praise, recognition, or reward. God values integrity and obedience, including the unseen decisions through which believers demonstrate their character.

This does not mean that one person must carry every burden or that seeking assistance is wrong. Healthy cooperation, delegation, and mutual support are essential. The problem arises when people consistently refuse their responsibilities while expecting others to do everything for them.

Examine the duties entrusted to you. Complete them diligently, admit your mistakes, and seek help when necessary. When everyone accepts appropriate responsibility, cooperation becomes stronger and unnecessary complaints diminish. Serve God faithfully, knowing that your ultimate accountability is before Him.

STAND FIRM IN THE PURPOSE OF GOD

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” — Galatians 5:1 (KJV)

God calls His people to remain firm in their faith and not become confused by every opposing voice. The Christian life requires a settled commitment to Jesus Christ, a clear understanding of Scripture, and the courage to obey God's truth even when other influences encourage compromise.

Confusion can grow when believers allow fear, false teaching, human pressure, or conflicting desires to determine their decisions. Instead of remaining grounded in Scripture, they may constantly change direction according to what others say. Spiritual stability requires testing ideas against God's Word and seeking wisdom before acting.

When a person belongs to Christ, their life should increasingly reflect His authority. Following Jesus is not merely a temporary preference that can be abandoned whenever obedience becomes inconvenient. It is a commitment to trust Him, learn from Him, and follow His teachings.

Jesus declared:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6 (KJV)

Standing firm does not mean becoming stubborn, refusing correction, or treating personal opinions as divine commands. Genuine spiritual conviction remains humble and willing to be corrected by Scripture. Believers must distinguish between God's clear instructions and their own preferences, impressions, or assumptions.

Make your commitment to Christ evident through your choices. Reject what contradicts His Word, remain open to godly correction, and do not let pressure from others draw you away from the Gospel. When you become uncertain, return to Scripture, pray, and seek mature Christian counsel.

Your purpose is not to win every argument or satisfy every person. Your purpose is to remain faithful to Jesus Christ and honour Him through the life you live.

PROCLAIM THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” — Matthew 5:14 (KJV)

Humanity faces spiritual decisions every day. Many people live without understanding the truth of the Gospel, while others are searching for forgiveness, hope, and a meaningful relationship with God. The church has a responsibility to proclaim Jesus Christ faithfully and to demonstrate His love through righteous living.

Believers must not remain silent simply because the message of the Gospel may be unpopular. They are called to speak the truth with courage, humility, and compassion. Their mission is not to humiliate those who disagree with them but to point people toward the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel exposes sin, reveals the holiness of God, and announces the forgiveness and new life available through Christ. It calls people to repent, believe, and turn from darkness toward the light of God's truth.

“That they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins.” — Acts 26:18 (KJV)

Proclaiming the Gospel requires both words and conduct. Christians must communicate biblical truth clearly while demonstrating honesty, compassion, justice, and humility. Their lives should not contradict the message they preach.

Continue sharing God's Word. Encourage those who are discouraged, teach those who are willing to learn, and serve people with dignity. Do not become discouraged when some reject the message. Remain faithful, trusting God to work in people's hearts while recognizing that every person must respond to the Gospel personally.

The light of Christ must be made visible through the church's witness. Let your words and actions direct others toward Jesus, who alone can reconcile humanity to God.

STOP WAITING FOR PERFECT CIRCUMSTANCES

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” — Philippians 4:13 (KJV)

Many people postpone obedience because they are waiting for perfect conditions. They believe they will serve God when they have more money, greater influence, fewer challenges, better relationships, or complete certainty about the future. Yet perfect circumstances rarely exist in a changing world.

God's work is not dependent upon every external condition becoming ideal. He calls believers to trust Him in the circumstances they actually face. This may mean beginning with limited resources, serving while learning, persevering through opposition, or taking a faithful step before every question has been answered.

Paul wrote about learning contentment in both abundance and need. His confidence was not that Christ would grant every personal ambition, but that Christ would strengthen him to remain faithful through changing circumstances.

“For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” — Philippians 4:11 (KJV)

Contentment is not an excuse for laziness or resistance to improvement. Believers should plan carefully, develop their abilities, correct weaknesses, and pursue legitimate opportunities. However, they must not make obedience conditional upon achieving a perfect environment.

God's presence is more important than ideal surroundings. A believer who remains rooted in Christ can continue to grow in wisdom and faith even during difficult seasons. Gratitude, prayer, and obedience can transform the way a person responds to circumstances, even when those circumstances do not change immediately.

Do not waste your life waiting for every obstacle to disappear. Seek God's direction and begin doing what is right with the resources and opportunities available to you. Trust Him for strength as you continue to grow.

JUDGE BY SPIRITUAL FRUIT, NOT WORDS ALONE

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” — Matthew 7:20 (KJV)

Words can be persuasive, but character is revealed through conduct over time. A person may speak confidently about God while displaying pride, dishonesty, selfishness, or a refusal to accept correction. Therefore, believers must exercise discernment and examine whether a person's life reflects the truth they profess.

Jesus warned against false prophets who appear harmless but are inwardly destructive. His teaching calls Christians to evaluate spiritual claims by their fruit rather than being impressed by outward appearances alone.

The fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (Galatians 5:22–23). These qualities provide important evidence of the Holy Spirit's work in a believer's life. They do not imply that Christians become perfect overnight, but they should demonstrate a growing pattern of Christlike character.

Spiritual maturity is not measured merely by public visibility, eloquent preaching, claimed spiritual experiences, or institutional success. It is demonstrated through obedience to God, love for others, humility, truthfulness, self-control, and faithfulness in daily responsibilities.

The Kingdom of God is not established through human prestige, family background, or outward status. It advances through the work of God in human hearts and through the faithful witness of people who submit to His truth.

Examine your own fruit before judging others. Are you growing in patience, honesty, forgiveness, and obedience? Do your actions support your testimony? Are you willing to repent when corrected? Let your life increasingly reflect the character of Jesus Christ.
