THE DANGER OF CHOOSING DARKNESS OVER LIGHT By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: John 3:19-20

"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved."

Introduction

In a world filled with deception and moral compromise, the distinction between truth and falsehood has become increasingly blurred. Many individuals consciously choose darkness over light, leading them away from God's divine purpose and into eternal ruin. The choice between embracing truth and rejecting it is a spiritual battle that determines one's eternal destiny. Those who reject the truth are not only deceived but also deceive others, leading them into destruction. This teaching seeks to illuminate the dangers of rejecting divine wisdom and embracing carnality, while also exhorting believers to remain steadfast in righteousness.

The Power of Truth and the Freedom It Brings

John 8:32

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Truth is the foundation of genuine freedom. It liberates the soul from the bondage of sin and deception. When an individual embraces truth, they gain clarity and spiritual strength. However, those who reject truth become prisoners of lies, bound by the chains of their own deception. They are driven by falsehoods and continually stray from the light into darkness. True believers are called to walk in the knowledge of Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth.

The Tragic Path of Those Who Reject the Light

Proverbs 14:12

"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."

There are many who willfully reject the light and embrace darkness because of their love for sin. These individuals are deceived into thinking that their way is right, but in the end, it leads to destruction. Their persistent opposition to truth makes them unworthy of further mercy. Such individuals, driven by their own carnality, stand in rebellion against God’s will and ultimately bring judgment upon themselves.

The Deceptive Nature of Sin and Its Consequences

Romans 6:23

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Sin entices individuals with temporary pleasures, but its consequences are eternal. The deceptive nature of sin blinds many, leading them to choose temporal satisfaction over everlasting life. Those who pursue carnal desires at the expense of righteousness become enslaved to their own lusts, bringing ruin upon themselves. Instead of experiencing the joy and peace of Christ, they inherit sorrow, destruction, and eternal torment.

The Call to Remain Steadfast in Righteousness

Galatians 6:9

"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."

Believers must remain unwavering in their pursuit of righteousness. The world is full of distractions and temptations designed to lead them astray, but those who remain firm in Christ will reap eternal rewards. While others choose deception and self-indulgence, the faithful are called to continue in obedience, knowing that God's promises are sure. By walking in the Spirit, they are empowered to resist the schemes of the enemy and remain victorious.

The Destiny of Those Who Embrace Darkness

Revelation 21:8

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

The final destiny of those who reject Christ and embrace wickedness is clear. They will face eternal separation from God, cast into the lake of fire prepared for the devil and his angels. This eternal punishment is the result of their refusal to accept God's invitation to salvation. The horror of eternal damnation should awaken a sense of urgency in believers to remain faithful and warn others about the consequences of rejecting Christ.

Summary

The choice between light and darkness is one that every individual must make. Those who reject Christ’s salvation choose their own destruction. The consequences of sin are severe, and those who refuse to turn away from their wicked ways will suffer eternal punishment. However, those who remain steadfast in righteousness will inherit eternal life.
