ACTIVATED BY FAITH, NOT DEVASTATED BY FEAR: WALKING IN THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
2 Corinthians 5:7

Introduction
Every believer must continually examine the condition of their spiritual life. The question is not only whether a person claims to know God, but whether that person is actively living by faith or being defeated by fear, doubt, and unbelief.
Faith is not a religious idea or a temporary emotion. Faith is a spiritual foundation that connects the believer with God’s promises. It is the confidence that God is faithful, His Word is true, and His power is greater than every circumstance.
Many believers struggle because they allow their natural situations to speak louder than the promises of God. They see problems, weaknesses, sicknesses, failures, and difficulties, and they begin to agree with what they see rather than what God has spoken. However, faith requires a different response. Faith chooses to believe God’s Word above human limitations.
The entire creation exists because God spoke. The universe was not formed by human ability but by the authority of His voice.
“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”
Hebrews 11:3
If God’s Word had power to create everything that exists, then His Word still carries power today. The believer must learn to stand upon that Word, declare it, and live according to its truth.
God has not called His people to become victims of circumstances. He has called them to become victorious through faith in Jesus Christ. The believer who is activated by faith does not deny challenges, but chooses to trust the One who is greater than every challenge.

Understanding True Faith
________________________________________
Faith begins when a person places complete confidence in God and His promises. Biblical faith is not pretending that problems do not exist. It is recognizing that God’s power is greater than any problem.
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1
Faith gives the believer spiritual vision. It allows a person to see beyond present circumstances and trust God’s eternal purpose. Without faith, people become controlled by fear, emotions, and human reasoning.
The faithful person is not someone who never experiences difficulties. The faithful person is one who refuses to abandon trust in God when difficulties appear.
Throughout Scripture, people of faith faced impossible situations. Abraham believed God despite his old age. Moses trusted God when standing before Pharaoh. David confronted Goliath because he understood that God was greater than the giant before him.
Their victory was not found in human strength but in confidence in God’s Word.
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
Luke 1:37
Faith activates the believer to move according to God’s promises rather than according to fear. It transforms the way people think, speak, and respond to life.

The Power of Agreeing With God’s Word
________________________________________
Words are powerful because they reveal what is happening within the heart. God created through His Word, and believers must understand the importance of aligning their speech with His truth.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Proverbs 18:21
This does not mean that human words have the same creative authority as God’s Word. Rather, it means that our words influence our attitudes, actions, and spiritual direction. When believers constantly speak fear, defeat, and hopelessness, they strengthen unbelief. When they speak according to God’s promises, they strengthen their faith.
The enemy desires believers to speak according to circumstances instead of according to God’s truth. Satan is called the father of lies because deception is his weapon.
“He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.”
John 8:44
Jesus demonstrated the power of standing on God’s Word when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness. Jesus did not argue with the devil through human reasoning. He responded with Scripture.
“It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4
The believer’s victory begins when the Word of God becomes the final authority above feelings, circumstances, and fears.

Faith Must Overcome Fear and Unbelief
________________________________________
Fear is one of the greatest enemies of faith. Fear magnifies problems and minimizes God’s power. Faith does the opposite: it recognizes God’s greatness and places problems under His authority.
“God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7
Fear causes people to retreat, but faith causes people to advance. Fear asks, “What if I fail?” Faith declares, “God is with me.”
Many people are defeated not because their problems are too great, but because fear has convinced them that God is too small. Yet Scripture reveals that God remains powerful in every generation.
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
Hebrews 13:8
The God who delivered Israel, protected Daniel, strengthened David, and raised Jesus from the dead is still faithful today.
Believers must not allow fear to control their decisions. They must submit their fears to God and allow faith to lead them.

Christ Has Provided Victory Through His Finished Work
________________________________________
The foundation of Christian victory is the completed work of Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Christ defeated sin, Satan, and the power of darkness.
“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”
1 John 3:8
Jesus did not go halfway. He completed the mission given by the Father. He endured suffering, rejection, and the cross because He knew the victory that would follow.
“It is finished.”
John 19:30
The believer’s confidence is not based on personal ability but on what Christ has already accomplished. Because Jesus overcame, those who belong to Him can walk in victory.
This does not mean believers will never experience battles. It means they do not fight from a position of defeat. They fight from the position of victory already established through Christ.
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
Romans 8:37

The Believer’s Weapon Is the Word of God
________________________________________
God has not left His people powerless. He has given them spiritual weapons to overcome the enemy.
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.”
2 Corinthians 10:4
The Word of God is one of the greatest weapons given to believers. It exposes lies, strengthens faith, renews the mind, and provides direction.
Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness through the written Word. This teaches believers that spiritual battles are not won by human arguments but by standing firmly upon God’s truth.
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.”
Revelation 12:11
A believer who neglects God’s Word becomes vulnerable. But a believer who fills the heart and mind with Scripture becomes spiritually prepared.
The Word must not only be read; it must be believed, obeyed, and applied.

Living as Victors Through Faith
________________________________________
God has not called His children to live defeated lives. He has called them to walk in victory through faith, obedience, and dependence upon Him.
A victorious believer is not someone without challenges. A victorious believer is someone who refuses to surrender to defeat.
Every day presents opportunities to choose faith over fear, truth over lies, and obedience over compromise.
“This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”
1 John 5:4
Faith grows when it is exercised. Just as muscles become stronger through use, spiritual faith becomes stronger through trusting God in every situation.
Believers must continually train their hearts and minds to agree with God’s Word. They must refuse to allow circumstances to define their identity.
Their identity is found in Christ.

Summary
The believer must choose whether to be activated by faith or devastated by fear. Faith stands upon God’s Word, while fear depends upon circumstances.
God’s Word remains powerful and unchanging. Those who trust His promises receive strength, courage, and victory.
Through Jesus Christ, believers are not called to be victims but overcomers. They are called to declare truth, walk in faith, and stand firmly against every attack of the enemy.

Conclusion
The Christian life is a life of faith. God has given His people everything necessary to overcome through Jesus Christ.
The question is not whether challenges will come. The question is whether believers will respond with faith or fear.
Those who stand upon God’s Word will discover that His promises are greater than their problems and His power is greater than every opposition.
