A NEW BREED OF BELIEVERS By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture

“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” — 2 Timothy 3:13–15 (KJV)

Introduction: God Is Raising a Faithful People

The living God is calling His people back to genuine faith, holiness, and unwavering devotion to Him. He never intended for believers to become so consumed by worldly concerns that they forget their Creator, neglect His Word, and lose their desire for His presence. Yet many who profess Christianity have become increasingly occupied with personal comfort, earthly ambitions, entertainment, and temporary pleasures, while their love for God and commitment to His truth have grown weak. Their outward religious activities may continue, but the inward devotion that should characterise their relationship with Him is often neglected.

The Scripture in 2 Timothy 3:13–15 warns that deception will increase and that evil people will continue to mislead others. In such times, believers must remain established in the truth they have received through the Holy Scriptures. The answer to spiritual deception is not to follow popular opinion or depend on human wisdom, but to remain faithful to God's Word and to Jesus Christ, through whom salvation is received.

God is therefore calling people to reject spiritual compromise, repent of their sins, and return to the life of obedience He requires. He is raising a people who will love truth more than deception, holiness more than worldly pleasure, and obedience more than human approval. This new seed of believers will not be defined merely by religious titles or outward appearances, but by their faithfulness to God, their willingness to receive correction, and their determination to walk in the newness of life found in Jesus Christ.

The Danger of Becoming Preoccupied With the World

God created His people to know Him, worship Him, obey His commandments, and fulfil His purposes. Earthly responsibilities are part of human life, but they must never replace devotion to the Lord. When people become consumed by wealth, comfort, ambition, entertainment, and personal interests, their spiritual priorities can gradually deteriorate. They may still identify themselves as Christians while giving little attention to prayer, Scripture, holiness, or fellowship with God.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

Jesus established the proper order of life: God's kingdom and righteousness must come first. Believers are not called to abandon every earthly responsibility, but to ensure that their responsibilities remain under God's authority. When temporary concerns become more important than obedience, the heart becomes divided and spiritual growth suffers.

Every believer must therefore examine what receives the greatest attention, affection, and effort in their life. If worldly interests consistently take precedence over God, a change of direction is necessary. The Lord calls His people to restore their devotion, renew their minds through Scripture, and live with eternity in view.

The Decline of Genuine Love and Commitment to God

One of the greatest dangers facing the church is the loss of sincere love for God. Religious activities may continue even when the heart has become distant from Him. People may attend services, speak Christian language, and participate in ministry while lacking the humility, obedience, and spiritual hunger that genuine faith should produce.

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” — Revelation 2:4 (KJV)

Christ's warning to the church at Ephesus demonstrates that religious service cannot compensate for a declining relationship with Him. A believer may work diligently and possess knowledge, yet still need to repent because love for the Lord has weakened. God desires more than outward performance; He desires hearts that sincerely seek Him and lives that reflect His character.

Restoring genuine devotion requires believers to return to prayer, the study of Scripture, repentance, and obedience. It also requires them to reject anything that competes with Christ for their loyalty. The measure of spiritual commitment is not simply what people claim, but whether their daily choices demonstrate love for God.

The Deception of False Religion

Scripture warns that deception will increase and that people who reject truth may themselves become instruments of deception. False religion arises when God's Word is distorted, disobedience is justified, and human desires are placed above divine authority. In such circumstances, people may claim God's approval while following teachings and practices that contradict His commandments.

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 11:13 (KJV)

This warning calls believers to exercise discernment. A message does not become true merely because it is delivered by a religious leader, accompanied by impressive language, or accepted by a large congregation. Every teaching must be examined in the light of Scripture, and every spiritual claim must be assessed according to God's revealed truth.

False religion can also thrive where leaders pursue personal gain, manipulate people, conceal wrongdoing, or discourage legitimate accountability. Such practices dishonour Christ and harm those who trust spiritual leadership. Believers must refuse to participate in deception and must seek communities where truth, integrity, repentance, and responsible leadership are upheld.

However, discernment must not become an excuse for spreading rumours or making unsupported accusations. Christians must distinguish established wrongdoing from personal disagreement and respond to serious concerns with honesty, fairness, and appropriate accountability.

God Calls His People to Repentance and Transformation

God's response to spiritual decline is a call to repentance. He does not call people merely to regret the consequences of their actions, but to turn away from sin and return to obedience. Repentance involves acknowledging wrongdoing, changing direction, and submitting one's life to the authority of God.

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” — Acts 3:19 (KJV)

No believer should consider themselves beyond correction. Pride prevents people from admitting their failures, while humility enables them to receive God's instruction and pursue genuine transformation. Those who have embraced deception must be willing to abandon it; those who have neglected their relationship with God must return to Him; and those who have harmed others must accept responsibility and seek to make matters right where possible.

God's correction is an opportunity to leave destructive ways and enter the newness of life He provides through Jesus Christ. The believer must therefore respond to His Word with obedience rather than excuses. A transformed life is demonstrated through changed attitudes, truthful speech, righteous conduct, and a growing willingness to follow God's will.

The Church Must Return to Holiness and Truth

The church is called to belong to Christ and to reflect His holiness. Its purpose is not simply to maintain religious programmes, attract crowds, or preserve an institution's reputation. It must remain faithful to the truth of the Gospel and nurture believers who live according to God's Word.

“That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” — Ephesians 5:27 (KJV)

This Scripture presents the holiness Christ desires for His church. It challenges believers and leaders to reject hypocrisy, immorality, dishonesty, exploitation, and every practice that contradicts His teachings. When wrongdoing becomes established within a congregation, it must not be concealed merely to protect the institution's public image. Truth and accountability must take priority.

A church that desires to honour Christ must encourage sincere repentance, protect vulnerable people, practise integrity, and remain accountable to Scripture. Its leaders must demonstrate humility and responsible stewardship, while its members must grow in discernment and obedience. Spiritual renewal begins when God's people stop defending compromise and return wholeheartedly to Him.

God Will Judge Persistent Rebellion

God is patient, but His patience must never be interpreted as approval of sin. When people repeatedly reject correction and deliberately continue in rebellion, they expose themselves to the consequences of their choices. Scripture warns that judgment begins with the household of God, reminding believers that those who claim His name are responsible for living according to His truth.

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” — 1 Peter 4:17 (KJV)

This warning calls the church to serious self-examination. Leaders and believers alike must recognise that spiritual privilege carries responsibility. Religious titles cannot protect anyone from accountability, and outward appearances cannot substitute for a life of faithfulness.

When God exposes wrongdoing, His people should respond with reverence, repentance, and a renewed commitment to righteousness. They should not become distracted by speculation about who will be judged, but should ensure that their own lives are aligned with His Word. The appropriate response to divine warning is to seek mercy, abandon evil, and remain faithful to Christ.

A New Seed of Believers Is Being Raised

Despite spiritual decline and widespread deception, there is hope in the living God. He continues to call people who will trust Him, receive His truth, reject falsehood, and remain faithful even when obedience becomes difficult. This new seed of believers represents a renewed commitment to genuine discipleship rather than a claim that every existing congregation has been rejected or that a particular group alone possesses God's approval.

“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” — 2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

Those who belong to God are called to depart from iniquity. Their identity must be demonstrated through faith in Christ, obedience to Scripture, humility, and a willingness to be corrected. They will not deliberately compromise truth for popularity or pursue worldly approval at the expense of their relationship with God.

This new seed will be characterised by sincere devotion, truthful conduct, and a willingness to accept God's discipline. Its members will recognise that human strength is insufficient to sustain spiritual faithfulness; they must depend on God's grace and the guidance of His Spirit. Their unity will be grounded in their common allegiance to Jesus Christ and their commitment to His Word.

The emergence of faithful believers is a reason for gratitude and renewed hope. Even in times of confusion, people can choose to obey God, reject deception, and live as witnesses to His truth.

Faithfulness Must Be Tested and Strengthened

Genuine faith is not established merely by words; it is revealed through perseverance, obedience, and trust in God during times of testing. Believers will encounter difficulties, opposition, and circumstances that challenge their commitment. These experiences can expose weaknesses and teach them to depend more fully on the Lord.

“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” — 1 Peter 1:7 (KJV)

Trials are not always evidence that God has abandoned someone. They may become opportunities for spiritual growth, the development of endurance, and a deeper reliance on His promises. Believers should therefore remain steadfast rather than abandon their faith when circumstances become difficult.

At the same time, faithfulness does not mean tolerating abuse, concealing wrongdoing, or refusing appropriate help. Walking with God requires wisdom, courage, and responsible decisions. The believer's confidence rests in God's character and promises, not in personal strength or the approval of others.

Those who remain faithful through testing can grow in spiritual maturity and become better equipped to encourage others to walk in truth.

Do Not Run Away From God's Correction

When God exposes a person's wrongdoing, the right response is repentance rather than resistance. Attempting to escape accountability may deepen the consequences of disobedience, while humble submission creates an opportunity for correction and restoration. The account of Jonah illustrates the danger of resisting God's command and the distress that followed his attempt to flee.

“But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.” — Jonah 1:3 (KJV)

Jonah's experience reminds believers that disobedience does not provide a lasting escape from God's authority. His journey led him into a crisis from which he needed God's intervention. Likewise, those who knowingly resist the Lord's direction should reconsider their choices and return to obedience.

The lesson is not that every hardship is punishment for a particular sin, but that deliberate rebellion should never be treated lightly. God calls His people to listen to His Word, accept correction, and fulfil their responsibilities faithfully. It is wiser to obey Him than to persist in a path that leads to spiritual distress.

Summary and Conclusion: Remain Faithful to God

The living God is calling His people to renew their devotion, reject deception, and return to the truth of His Word. Worldly distractions, false teaching, pride, and persistent compromise can weaken faith and draw believers away from their first love. Yet God's call to repentance remains open to those who are willing to humble themselves and change their ways.

The new seed of believers will be distinguished not by religious claims alone, but by faith in Jesus Christ, obedience to Scripture, sincere repentance, and perseverance through testing. They will reject falsehood, receive correction, and seek to honour God in their conduct. Their hope will rest in Him rather than in human strength, popularity, or worldly security.

Therefore, examine your heart and determine whether your life reflects genuine faithfulness. Do not defend sin, follow deception, or allow worldly interests to replace devotion to Christ. Return to the Lord, remain grounded in His Word, and walk in the newness of life He provides.
