THE POWER OF SMALL BEGINNINGS: GOD\'S PATHWAY TO SPIRITUAL AND KINGDOM INCREASE By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture
“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice...” — Zechariah 4:10
Introduction
One of the greatest mistakes people make in their spiritual journey is underestimating the value of small beginnings. Human nature often desires immediate success, instant recognition, visible results, and abundant increase. People admire large ministries, successful businesses, influential leaders, and prosperous individuals, yet few understand the humble beginnings from which these things emerged.
God's Kingdom operates according to principles that are often opposite to the thinking of the world. The world celebrates greatness after it becomes visible, but God values the hidden process that produces greatness. The world seeks instant promotion, but God develops character through seasons of obscurity. The world measures success by outward appearance, while God measures success by obedience, humility, and faithfulness.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly demonstrates His preference for beginning with small things. He chose a shepherd boy named David before making him king. He selected fishermen before transforming them into apostles. He planted His Kingdom message into the hearts of ordinary people before changing entire nations through them.
The prophetic message before us reveals a profound Kingdom truth: God intentionally works through small beginnings. Just as a seed must be planted, die, and break through the soil before becoming fruitful, so every work of God begins in humility before it reaches abundance.
This lesson explores God's divine pattern of growth, the importance of humility, the stewardship of blessings, the dangers of pride and greed, and the eternal value of investing in God's Kingdom. As believers, we must learn to appreciate the hidden seasons, trust God's process, and remain faithful stewards of everything He entrusts to us.

God's Kingdom Begins with a Seed
“And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground.” — Mark 4:26
Every manifestation of God's work begins as a seed. Whether it is a calling, a ministry, a vision, a family, a church, or a spiritual awakening, God starts with something that appears insignificant to human eyes.
A seed does not look impressive. It is small, easily overlooked, and often buried beneath the ground where no one can see it. Yet within that seed exists a powerful force of life designed by God Himself. Hidden within its small frame is the potential for multiplication, growth, fruitfulness, and abundance.
The Kingdom of God functions in precisely the same manner. The Gospel enters the heart as a seed. The Word of God is planted in the soul. Spiritual growth begins invisibly. Transformation starts internally long before it becomes externally visible.
Many believers become discouraged because they do not immediately see results. They pray and expect instant answers. They obey God and expect immediate rewards. However, God's process involves development. Seeds require time. Roots must grow before branches can flourish.
When we understand God's Kingdom principles, we cease despising small beginnings and begin appreciating every stage of growth.

The Necessity of Death Before Growth
“Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” — John 12:24
The prophetic message highlights a powerful spiritual principle: before a seed can produce life, its outer shell must die.
This principle applies not only to agriculture but also to spiritual development. Before God can bring us into greater usefulness, He often allows seasons that break our pride, self-reliance, and dependence upon worldly systems.
The outer husk represents the flesh, self-centered ambition, pride, and personal agendas. These things often prevent believers from experiencing the fullness of God's purpose.
Many desire resurrection power without experiencing crucifixion. They want promotion without preparation. They desire fruitfulness without surrender.
Yet God's process remains unchanged. There must be dying before there is multiplication. There must be surrender before there is increase. There must be humility before there is exaltation.
The believer who embraces God's refining process becomes fertile soil for Kingdom growth and lasting fruitfulness.

The Power Hidden Within Small Beginnings
“For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.” — 1 Corinthians 4:20
The message uses the remarkable example of a seed pushing through soil, pavement, ice, and snow. Such a tiny object possesses enough life-force to overcome tremendous resistance.
This illustrates the supernatural power God places within every divine assignment. What appears weak to the world often contains extraordinary power when energized by God's Spirit.
Similarly, the Gospel may appear simple, yet it transforms lives. Prayer may appear insignificant, yet it changes circumstances. A small act of obedience may appear unnoticed, yet it can impact generations.
God delights in demonstrating His strength through what appears weak.
“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” — 1 Corinthians 1:27
Believers must never judge their future by their current size, resources, or visibility. God's power is not limited by human limitations. The same God who causes a seed to break through hardened ground can cause His purposes to overcome every obstacle.

The Miracle of Spiritual Birth
“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” — John 3:7
The message compares spiritual growth to the birth of a child. Every human life begins in a protected environment before emerging into the world through the process of birth.
Likewise, spiritual life begins when the seed of God's Word enters the heart. The Holy Spirit nurtures that seed until transformation begins to emerge.
Birth often involves struggle, discomfort, and transition. Yet every healthy birth introduces new life.
The new believer may initially seem spiritually immature, but hidden within that new life is tremendous potential. Through discipleship, obedience, prayer, and fellowship with God, spiritual maturity develops.
God never despises spiritual infancy. Instead, He nurtures it patiently until maturity is achieved.
The Church must learn to value spiritual growth at every stage and recognize that today's new believer may become tomorrow's powerful servant of God.

Humility: The Foundation of Kingdom Increase
“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” — 1 Peter 5:6
One of the strongest themes in the message is humility.
Pride causes many people to miss God's intended blessings. Pride convinces individuals that they are self-sufficient. It leads them to take credit for God's work and forget the source of their blessings.
Humility recognizes God's sovereignty. Humility acknowledges dependence upon God's grace. Humility gives glory to God for every achievement and success.
The truly mature believer understands that every opportunity, gift, talent, resource, and blessing originates from God.
When believers remain humble, God continues entrusting them with greater responsibility and greater influence. Humility positions us for divine promotion because God can safely bless those who consistently honor Him.

Kingdom Stewardship and the Purpose of Prosperity
“But remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth.” — Deuteronomy 8:18
The prophetic message provides an important warning regarding material wealth and prosperity.
God is not opposed to blessing His people. Throughout Scripture, God blesses individuals financially, materially, and spiritually. However, every blessing carries responsibility.
Kingdom prosperity is not merely about personal comfort. God blesses His people so they can become channels of blessing to others.
Resources entrusted by God should contribute to advancing the Gospel, supporting ministry, helping the needy, strengthening communities, and expanding God's Kingdom throughout the earth.
The danger occurs when believers begin viewing blessings as personal possessions rather than divine trusts. When wealth becomes an idol, it blinds people to eternal realities.
God desires faithful stewards, not selfish consumers.

The Danger of Setting Our Hearts on Riches
“If riches increase, set not your heart upon them.” — Psalm 62:10
Earthly wealth is temporary. Markets fluctuate. Economies collapse. Natural disasters destroy possessions. Wars devastate nations. Material wealth can disappear suddenly.
The prophetic message reminds us that treasures accumulated on earth cannot accompany us into eternity.
Jesus taught this truth clearly:
“Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” — Matthew 6:20
Wise believers understand that eternal investments carry greater value than temporary possessions. Every act of obedience, every soul reached, every ministry supported, and every Kingdom assignment fulfilled contributes to eternal rewards.
Our hearts must remain attached to God rather than material possessions.

Following the Guidance of the Holy Spirit
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” — Romans 8:14
The message concludes with a powerful instruction: allow the Holy Spirit to direct your spending, giving, saving, and living.
Many financial mistakes occur because people make decisions based upon emotions, social pressure, greed, fear, or fleshly desires.
The Holy Spirit provides wisdom, discernment, and guidance. He helps believers manage resources responsibly and align their decisions with God's purposes.
When believers remain sensitive to the Spirit's leadership, they avoid wastefulness, cultivate generosity, and maintain proper priorities.
True satisfaction is not found in accumulating possessions. It is found in intimacy with the Father, conformity to Christ, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

Summary
God's Kingdom consistently begins with small beginnings. Just as seeds must be planted, die, and grow before producing fruit, believers must embrace God's process of spiritual development. Humility is essential for Kingdom growth, while pride hinders divine blessing. God entrusts resources to His people not merely for personal comfort but for advancing His Kingdom purposes. Wealth must never replace devotion to God, and believers must remain faithful stewards of every blessing received. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God's people can experience both spiritual and practical increase while maintaining eternal priorities.
Conclusion
The message from the Lord calls believers to value what the world often ignores. Small beginnings are not insignificant in God's eyes. Every great work starts as a seed. Every harvest begins with planting. Every spiritual awakening starts with obedience.
God's process may appear slow, hidden, and humble, but it is always purposeful. The same God who brings forth mighty trees from tiny seeds is able to bring forth extraordinary Kingdom fruit through surrendered lives.
May we never despise the days of small beginnings. Instead, may we embrace God's process, remain humble, steward His blessings faithfully, and allow His Spirit to guide every aspect of our lives.
