THE DEPENDABLE DEFENDER: TRUSTING THE LIVING GOD IN A TROUBLED WORLD By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture

Introduction

In every generation, humanity searches for security, protection, and assurance in the face of uncertainty. When times are calm, people often believe they are self-sufficient, but when crises arise—through war, civil unrest, terrorism, economic instability, or personal loss—the fragile nature of human strength is exposed. It is in such seasons that the question becomes unavoidable: Who is truly dependable?

The message before us reveals the heart of the Living God declaring Himself as the Dependable Defender—the only true source of safety, provision, protection, and deliverance. Throughout history, people have trusted in false gods, ideologies, political systems, military power, wealth, popularity, and human approval, only to be left disappointed, displaced, and destroyed. God makes it clear that those who depend on lies and liars ultimately inherit hopelessness, while those who depend on Him are preserved.

This lesson confronts modern misconceptions that deny the reality of miracles, reduce God to a theological concept rather than a living Defender, and replace reverential fear of God with fear of circumstances or hunger for human approval. The Living God declares that He has never changed, that miracles have not ceased, and that His power remains active for those who trust Him.

In a world marked by turmoil, terror, and trauma, God invites His people to run into Him—not into systems, not into flattery, not into the praise of men, but into His unchanging nature. He calls His children to reject fear, refuse compromise, abandon idolatry, and follow Jesus Christ, the only Mediator between God and humanity.

This lesson explores the identity of God as the Dependable Defender, the danger of trusting false securities, the cost of seeking human approval, the certainty of opposition from the world, and the blessing reserved for those who keep God as their first love. It is both a warning and an invitation—to return to wholehearted trust in the Living God who defends His true ones.

The Living God Revealed as the Only Dependable Defender

“I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God besides Me.”

— Isaiah 45:5

________________________________________

God introduces Himself unmistakably as the Living God, declaring His uniqueness and exclusivity. He is not one among many options; He is the only true God who has demonstrated His power through creation, covenant, deliverance, and miracles throughout history. No god named among men—past or present—has done what He alone has accomplished.

False gods promise security but deliver abandonment. Those who depend on them are often left hopeless and exposed because lies cannot sustain life. God, however, declares that He does not neglect to provide for or protect those who look to Him. His dependability is rooted in His nature, not in circumstances.

To know God as Defender is not merely to acknowledge His existence, but to rely on Him actively. Dependence is demonstrated through trust, obedience, and reverential fear. Those who truly depend on Him discover that His protection is not theoretical but experiential, even in the darkest seasons of life.

Miracles Have Not Ceased: The God Who Still Acts

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

— Hebrews 13:8

________________________________________

God strongly rebukes the notion that the age of miracles has passed. Such claims are exposed as theological distortions that replace relationship with intellectual trivia. Miracles do not flow from doctrine alone; they flow from relationship with the Living God.

Throughout the ages, God has intervened supernaturally for His people—delivering them from enemies, providing in impossible situations, and demonstrating His supremacy over every opposing force. To deny His continued miraculous power is to deny His unchanging nature.

In times of crisis, believers must remember that God has not become weaker, distant, or disengaged. He remains fully capable of defending, preserving, and delivering those who trust Him. Faith in the Living God activates hope, while disbelief in His power leaves people vulnerable to fear and despair.

Running Into God in Times of Trouble

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

— Psalm 46:1

________________________________________

When troubles multiply—through war, civil unrest, terrorism, and social instability—God calls His people not to panic, but to run into Him. He presents Himself as a High Tower of strength and safety, a secure refuge in the midst of chaos.

Fear thrives when people fix their eyes on threats rather than on God. Yet God assures His people that He is able to shelter them even in the storms of national upheaval and global conflict. His protection is not limited by geography, politics, or human power.

This does not mean believers ignore reality; it means they interpret reality through faith. While acknowledging danger, they refuse to live in terror. Instead, they pray, trust, and rest in the sovereignty of God who sees the end from the beginning.

Prayer for Leadership and Divine Strategy

“I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority.”

— 1 Timothy 2:1–2

________________________________________

God instructs His people to pray continually for those in leadership over nations. Leadership without divine guidance becomes vulnerable to deception, pride, and destruction. When leaders are guided by the Spirit of God, they are able to operate in Divine Strategy, outsmarting forces of destruction and death.

Prayer is not passive; it is strategic. Through prayer, God releases wisdom, restraint, and discernment to those in authority. Believers who intercede contribute to stability, peace, and preservation far beyond what they may see visibly.

Rather than being consumed by fear of bombings, disputes, or uprisings, God’s people are called to stand in faith-filled intercession, trusting that He remains actively involved in the affairs of nations.

The Fear of God Versus the Approval of Men

“The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.”

— Proverbs 29:25

________________________________________

God calls His people to hold reverential fear toward Him alone. This fear is not terror but honor, respect, and submission. It recognizes God’s supremacy and refuses to elevate human opinion above divine truth.

The world hates God because He is Almighty. Consequently, those who align with Him should not expect the world’s approval. God reminds His people that wicked hatred toward the upright is inevitable. Just as the world hated Jesus, it will hate those who follow Him.

Seeking the approval of men leads to compromise, spiritual emptiness, and separation from God’s will. Those who sell out for popularity may gain applause temporarily, but they lose eternal reward. History bears witness to many who began well with God but ended in destruction because they chose human praise over divine approval.

Jesus Christ: The Only Way and Perfect Example

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

— John 14:6

________________________________________

God makes it unmistakably clear that salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone. Flattery, popularity, and human systems cannot save anyone from the penalty of sin. Jesus is the Messiah, the Mediator between God and humanity.

By faithfully completing His earthly mission, Jesus demonstrated perfect obedience and trust. He did not seek human approval, even when crowds praised Him one day and demanded His crucifixion the next. Because He remained true to God, He was exalted as King of kings and Lord of lords.

Those who follow in His steps are called to the same faithfulness. Their path may include rejection, misunderstanding, and opposition, but it will also include divine strength, protection, and ultimate victory.

Walking Daily Under the Guidance of the Holy Spirit

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”

— Proverbs 3:5

________________________________________

To know God as the Dependable Defender requires daily surrender to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Human understanding is limited and easily deceived, but the Spirit leads in truth, light, love, and life.

God warns against following the dictates of evil men whose actions lead nations into destruction and damnation. History repeatedly confirms that when people reject God’s guidance, the result is chaos and suffering.

Those who draw closer to God experience correction not as punishment, but as love. His guidance preserves them from deception and aligns them with His purposes. As trust deepens, blessings increase, for God does not withhold good from those who belong to Him.

Summary

This lesson reveals God as the Living God and the only Dependable Defender. False gods and human approval fail, but God remains faithful. Miracles have not ceased, and God continues to protect, provide, and guide His people. In times of global turmoil, believers are called to trust Him, pray for leaders, reject fear, and follow Jesus Christ alone. True security is found not in popularity or power, but in reverential trust in God.

Salvation Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I acknowledge that You are the Living God, and there is no other besides You. I confess that I have sinned and placed my trust in things that cannot save me. Today, I turn away from my sins and place my full trust in Jesus Christ, Your Son, who died for me and rose again. I receive Him as my Lord and Savior. Cleanse my heart, forgive my sins, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, trust You, and live for You.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
