The Power of Commitment: Who Do You Serve? By: Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (Matthew 6:24, NIV)

Introduction
Commitment is one of the most powerful forces that govern human existence. Every person is committed to something or someone—whether it be to God, to self, or to the idols of this world. Commitment is not just an abstract idea; it is the very foundation upon which life decisions are made. The question that every individual must ask is: Who am I committed to? The answer to this question will determine the path of one's life, the choices they make, and ultimately, their eternal destination.
In a world filled with distractions, temptations, and deception, many are unknowingly in captivity to forces they do not even recognize. Some are enslaved by the idols of materialism, others by self-indulgence, and still others by worldly philosophies. But God calls His people to a higher standard—a commitment to Him alone. This article will explore the dangers of misplaced commitments, the fate of those who serve false masters, and the blessings of being wholly committed to God.

The Idolatry of False Commitments
Throughout history, people have been drawn into worshiping idols. These idols are not merely carved images; they represent anything that takes precedence over God. Today, modern idols come in many forms—money, fame, relationships, power, and even self-worship.
"They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them." (Psalm 135:16-18, NIV)
People who commit themselves to idols are spiritually blind and deaf. They cry out to their false gods but receive no response. Their devotion to these lifeless entities leads them into deeper deception and bondage, as they remain shackled by the very things they trust in.

The Slavery of Self-Worship
Some do not bow to physical idols but instead serve the "god of self." They live solely to please themselves, believing that personal satisfaction is the ultimate goal. However, this pursuit of self-pleasure leads only to emptiness.
"There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death." (Proverbs 14:12, NIV)
Self-worship blinds individuals to the reality of their need for God. They may appear to have it all together outwardly, but inwardly, they are broken, unfulfilled, and lost. Their commitment to self ultimately leads them away from the truth, making them easy prey for the enemy’s deceptions.

God Demands Exclusive Commitment
God does not accept divided loyalty. He requires His people to be fully committed to Him and His ways. Any attempt to serve both God and another master is futile, as Jesus clearly stated.
"Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15, NIV)
Believers must reject every form of idolatry and self-worship, choosing instead to walk in righteousness and obedience to God’s commands. The only way to experience true freedom and peace is to commit wholeheartedly to God.

The Fate of the Wicked and the Power of Prayer
Many who serve the kingdom of darkness believe they are in control. They boast in their power, riches, and influence, imagining they can shape the world according to their desires. However, history has repeatedly shown that those who exalt themselves against God are brought to ruin.
"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18, NIV)
The wicked may seem to prosper for a time, but their end is certain. God will bring down those who oppose Him and establish His justice upon the earth. This is why believers must remain steadfast in prayer, interceding for divine intervention against the forces of darkness.

Avoiding the Influence of the World’s Media
One of the greatest tools of deception today is the media. News outlets, entertainment industries, and social platforms often propagate fear, immorality, and false ideologies. Many people are enslaved by the narratives they consume daily.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Romans 12:2, NIV)
Believers must guard their hearts and minds against the influence of ungodly media. Instead of being swayed by the world’s agenda, they must remain grounded in the truth of God’s Word.

Summary and Conclusion
Commitment determines destiny. Those who commit themselves to idols, self-worship, or worldly powers will face destruction. However, those who choose to be fully devoted to God will walk in His blessings and eternal security. The call is clear: Choose this day whom you will serve.
God is seeking a people who will stand firm in faith, reject the allurements of the enemy, and live as true disciples of Christ. The choice is ours—will we commit ourselves to the temporary, or will we dedicate our lives to the eternal?

Prayer of Salvation
If you have never committed your life to Christ or have strayed from Him, you can turn back to Him today. Pray this prayer with sincerity:
Heavenly Father, I come before You acknowledging that I have sinned and turned away from You. I repent of my sins and ask for Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again for my salvation. I accept Him as my Lord and Savior. Come into my heart, guide my life, and help me to remain committed to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
