THE ADDICTION TO LIES AND LIARS By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: John 8:44 - "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

INTRODUCTION

In the world today, a dangerous addiction has gripped the hearts and minds of multitudes. This addiction is not to drugs, alcohol, or other substances, but rather to lies and liars. The spread of deception has reached unprecedented levels, largely facilitated by advancements in media and technology. People have become so accustomed to lies that they can no longer differentiate truth from falsehood. The addiction to deception is enslaving, leading many into spiritual blindness, confusion, and destruction.

God does not desire for His people to be caught in the web of lies. He calls us to seek truth, walk in righteousness, and remain vigilant against the schemes of the enemy. The purpose of this teaching is to expose the dangers of addiction to lies, reveal the consequences of following deceitful paths, and guide believers toward the liberating truth found in Jesus Christ.

THE WORLD ENSLAVED BY LIES

2 Timothy 4:3-4 - "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

The world today is characterized by a deep-seated love for lies. People crave deception that aligns with their desires rather than truth that convicts and transforms. Media, entertainment, politics, and even some religious institutions have become breeding grounds for falsehood, misleading millions into error.

Those addicted to lies become enslaved, losing their ability to think critically or discern spiritual realities. Their addiction is so deep that they not only believe lies but also aggressively defend them. As a result, deception spreads like wildfire, corrupting minds and leading people further from God.

THE SPIRITUAL DANGER OF EMBRACING LIES

Isaiah 5:20 - "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!"

Believing and propagating lies is not a neutral act—it is spiritually destructive. Lies come from Satan, who is described in Scripture as "the father of lies". Those who embrace falsehood align themselves with the devil’s agenda rather than God’s truth. This leads to:

• Spiritual Blindness – Unable to recognize or accept the truth of God’s Word.

• Moral Decay – A decline in godly values, leading to lawlessness.

• Hardness of Heart – Resistance to correction and conviction by the Holy Spirit.

God warns that those who persist in deception will face judgment. Truth is the foundation of righteousness, and without it, people are doomed to perish in delusion.

BREAKING FREE FROM THE ADDICTION TO LIES

John 8:32 - "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Breaking free from deception requires a radical commitment to truth. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Those who desire to be free must:

• Seek God’s Word – The Bible is the ultimate source of truth.

• Submit to the Holy Spirit – He guides believers into all truth.

• Reject False Teachings – Discernment is key to avoiding deception.

• Surround Yourself with Truthful People – Fellowship with those who uphold God’s truth.

Freedom from lies is not a one-time event but a continuous process of renewing the mind with the truth of God’s Word.

Many have become blind and enslaved, unable to distinguish between deception and reality. However, God calls His people to stand apart, embracing truth and rejecting falsehood.
