THE PURPOSE OF BUFFETING IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER By: Major Frank Materu

Key Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

"For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."

Introduction

In our Christian walk, we often encounter hardships, trials, and adversities. Many believers struggle to understand why God allows difficulties in their lives. Some question His love, while others resist and seek to avoid suffering at all costs. However, the Bible teaches us that buffeting, or the trials we face, serves a divine purpose. Just as precious metals, stones, and glass undergo a refining process to achieve their true beauty, so must believers endure seasons of affliction to shine forth with the glory of God.

This teaching explores the significance of buffeting in the life of a believer. It will address why God allows it, the dangers of resisting it, and the benefits of embracing it as part of our spiritual growth. The ultimate goal is for us to develop a Christlike character, remain steadfast in our faith, and fulfill God's purpose for our lives.

God Knows What You Need

Matthew 6:8

"Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him."

One of the greatest assurances we have as believers is that God knows exactly what we need. He is not ignorant of our struggles, nor does He take pleasure in our suffering. Rather, He uses challenges to refine us and mold us into the vessels He has designed us to be. When we rely on Him, He uplifts, directs, and guides us in His perfect way.

Buffeting Produces Spiritual Growth

James 1:2-4

"My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."

Many people resist opposition and hardship because they view them as unnecessary or harmful. However, God allows buffeting not to destroy us, but to perfect us. Just as a craftsman polishes wood, metal, or glass through intense friction, God uses trials to refine our faith, build endurance, and bring forth His glory in us.

The Danger of Resisting Buffeting

Proverbs 16:18

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

Many people in today's world reject anything that opposes them. In their pride, they refuse correction and resist the refining process. This attitude leads to spiritual stagnation and dullness. Just as stagnant water becomes foul and lifeless, so too does a Christian who refuses to embrace God's shaping hand. Instead of growing in faith, they remain unchanged, weak, and unfruitful.

Buffeting Leads to a Greater Glory

Romans 8:18

"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us."

God’s ultimate desire is for His people to shine forth with His glory. This is not achieved through comfort and ease, but through trials that test and purify our faith. Those who endure suffering for Christ’s sake will reign with Him, for they have been refined and prepared for a greater purpose.

Conclusion

While adversity may seem harsh and painful, it serves a divine purpose. Just as Jesus endured suffering for the sake of our salvation, we too must be willing to undergo trials to become more like Him. Instead of resisting hardship, we should embrace it with faith, knowing that God is using it to shape us into vessels of honor.

Final Word of Encouragement

Philippians 1:6

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."

Be encouraged! God is at work in your life. Do not grow weary in the process, but remain steadfast, trusting that He is bringing you into a place of greater blessing, glory, and purpose.
