GOD’S MERCIES ARE NEW EVERY MORNING By Major Frank Materu

Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV) – “Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”


Introduction

Every new day brings a fresh opportunity to experience the mercy of God. His mercy is not dependent on our circumstances but is constant and renewed each morning. As believers, we must adopt an attitude of gratitude, recognizing God's mercies and giving thanks for His never-ending love. By doing so, we align ourselves with His grace, fortifying ourselves against the trials of life.

In a world full of challenges, we must choose to focus on God's faithfulness, knowing that His mercy is sufficient for every moment. When we practice gratitude, we reflect God's character and experience the power of His mercies in our lives.


The Power of Gratitude

God’s mercy is a tender, unchanging gift that we experience daily. The key to accessing His abundant grace is an attitude of gratitude. When we give thanks, we acknowledge God’s goodness and open ourselves to His favor.

  1. Psalm 92:1-2 – "It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your steadfast love in the morning, and Your faithfulness by night."
  2. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

When we cultivate gratitude, we develop a strong altitude of thankfulness that protects us from the negativity and despair the enemy seeks to sow. Gratitude strengthens our faith and shields us from discouragement. Even when our physical circumstances seem difficult, recognizing the mercy of God helps us find peace and joy.


God Is Glorified in Meekness, Not Numbers

In today’s world, it’s common for people to measure success by the size or number of their achievements. But God is not glorified in the numbers we gather. He is glorified in a humble heart, one that acknowledges His sovereignty and strength.

  1. Matthew 5:3 – “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
  2. James 4:6 – “But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.'”

When we boast of our achievements or rely on our strength, we rob God of the glory He deserves. But when we acknowledge His power, we honor Him in all we do, even in small, unseen acts of obedience. True greatness is found in humility, and it is through humility that God’s power is made evident.


The Power of Words: Life or Death?

Our words carry immense power. In fact, they can either bring life or bring destruction. The Bible teaches us to speak words of life, words that are in alignment with God’s will for us.

  1. Proverbs 18:21 – "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."
  2. Ephesians 4:29 – "Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

When we confess life and declare God’s goodness, we align ourselves with His Spirit, and life flows freely. But when we speak death—whether through negativity, complaints, or defeat—we invite destruction. Choose life by choosing to speak the truth of God’s Word over your circumstances.


Interceding for Others: A Call to Compassion

As we focus on the mercy of God in our own lives, it’s essential that we also look beyond ourselves to the needs of others. Intercession is a powerful tool in the believer’s life, and through it, we can affect change and bring mercy to others.

  1. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 – "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."
  2. Ezekiel 22:30 – "I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one."

We are called to intercede for those who are in darkness and need God’s mercy. The act of standing in the gap is a powerful demonstration of love and compassion. As we pray for others, we align ourselves with God’s heart for the lost, and He hears our cries and responds.

An attitude of gratitude keeps us grounded in His faithfulness, preventing us from being consumed by pride and negativity.
