THE POWER OF UNITY IN BUILDING GOD\'S KINGDOM By Major Frank Materu

Introduction

Unity is a cornerstone of the Christian faith and a fundamental principle in building God's Kingdom. It is through the bonds of fellowship and mutual support that believers can glorify God and fulfill His purpose on earth.

As Christians, we are called to work together, laying aside differences, and embracing love, humility, and service. The Psalmist declared, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1, NIV).

This article explores the importance of unity in God’s Kingdom, how we can achieve it, and the blessings it brings to the church, families, and communities.

The Call to Unity

Unity is not merely a suggestion but a command from God. Jesus, in His prayer for believers, emphasized the significance of oneness:

"That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me." (John 17:21, NIV).

Unity begins with acknowledging that we are one body in Christ. Paul reminds us:

"There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." (Ephesians 4:4-6, NIV).

To achieve this unity, believers must embrace humility, gentleness, patience, and love (Ephesians 4:2).

Unity in Diversity

The body of Christ is made up of diverse members with unique gifts and callings. Paul explains this beautifully:

"Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ." (1 Corinthians 12:12, NIV).

Our differences should not divide us but complement each other, allowing us to function as a unified body. When each member serves faithfully in their role, the whole church thrives.

Scripture encourages us to embrace diversity while focusing on what unites us—our shared faith in Christ. "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." (Ephesians 4:3, NIV).

The Blessings of Unity

Unity brings blessings that overflow into every area of life. When believers come together, they experience:

  1. God’s Presence and Favor
  2. Jesus promised that where two or three gather in His name, He is there with them (Matthew 18:20). This unity invites God's presence, guidance, and blessings.
  3. Spiritual Growth and Strength
  4. Unity strengthens faith as believers encourage and build each other up. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
  5. Witness to the World
  6. A united church is a powerful testimony of God's love. “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” (John 13:35, NIV).

Practical Steps to Build Unity

Building unity requires intentionality. Here are some steps we can take:

  1. Commit to Prayer and Forgiveness
  2. Pray for one another and forgive as Christ forgave us (Colossians 3:13).
  3. “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” (James 5:16, NIV).
  4. Encourage Fellowship and Communication
  5. Spend time together in worship, study, and service. Good communication fosters understanding and harmony.
  6. Serve Selflessly
  7. Follow Christ’s example of servant leadership (Mark 10:45). When we serve one another, we strengthen bonds and glorify God.

Conclusion

Unity is the foundation upon which we build the Kingdom of God. When we come together in love, humility, and purpose, we reflect God's glory and power to the world. Let us heed Paul’s encouragement:

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9, NIV).

May we strive for unity in our churches, families, and communities, knowing that together, we can accomplish immeasurably more for God’s glory.

This call to unity is not just for today but for eternity. Let us walk together in faith, hand in hand, as ambassadors of Christ's love and peace.
