Desire and Seek God By Major. Frank Materu
Introduction
In today’s world, many claim to belong to God, but few truly seek Him and long for His presence.
As believers, we are often distracted by the things of the world, seeking material wealth and comfort, neglecting the pursuit of a deep and personal relationship with God.
This article explores the importance of truly desiring and seeking God, and how this pursuit impacts our spiritual lives.
We will also examine the consequences of neglecting to seek God and the blessings that come from earnestly seeking His face.
Desire to See and Seek God
The Bible tells us that when the people of God truly desire Him and seek Him with all their hearts, they will find Him, for He is always near.
Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” This is a promise for those who desire and seek God in sincerity and truth.
Unfortunately, in our generation, not many people who claim to be followers of Christ truly seek Him.
Instead, they search for things that satisfy only the flesh—worldly desires that bring no eternal value.
The Bible warns against seeking the things of this world that can destroy our souls and separate us from God’s eternal kingdom.
In 1 John 2:15-16, we are told, “Do not love the world or anything in the world.
If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”
The Dangers of Worldly Desires
Many people spend their lives chasing after things that will never satisfy.
They complain and cry out for more, believing that material wealth or success will bring happiness.
However, when it comes to seeking God, they do nothing.
They do not kneel in prayer or seek God’s presence. Instead, they seek things that only bring temporary pleasure, which ultimately harm their souls.
James 4:3 states, “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
The pursuit of worldly things often leads to spiritual emptiness and separation from God.
It is essential to recognize that true fulfillment comes not from accumulating material possessions but from seeking the presence of God, which brings peace and eternal joy.
Repentance and Humility Before God
God desires a humble heart that is willing to repent and turn away from sin.
As 2 Chronicles 7:14 reminds us, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
True repentance involves humbling ourselves before God, acknowledging our sins, and turning to Him in sincerity.
However, when we fail to repent, we are in danger of spiritual destruction. In Hosea 4:6, the Lord warns, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”
Without repentance and seeking God, we remain in spiritual ignorance and are vulnerable to the consequences of sin.
Obey the Commandments of the Holy Spirit
To live according to God’s will, we must obey the commands of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:5-6 teaches, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
When we obey the Holy Spirit, we align our lives with God’s purpose and experience the fullness of life in Him.
Matthew 6:33 instructs us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
The kingdom of God is not something we can gain through our own efforts or wealth.
It is found in seeking God first and living in His righteousness. When we do so, God provides everything we need.
God’s Presence in Our Lives
God is present with those who seek Him wholeheartedly. When we truly desire to know Him and live in His presence, He draws near to us.
As James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
However, when we neglect God, He withdraws His presence.
The importance of desiring and seeking God is not just for our spiritual benefit, but it also leads to the fulfillment of God’s plans and purposes in our lives.
Conclusion
The call to seek and desire God is urgent and necessary. Psalm 27:4 says, “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”
When we truly long for God, He will reveal Himself to us, forgive our sins, and guide us into eternal life.
Let us not be consumed by worldly desires but focus our hearts and minds on seeking God, for He is the true source of life and peace.
May we obey the commands of the Holy Spirit, live in His presence, and seek His kingdom above all else.
As we do so, we will experience the fullness of God’s grace and live according to His purpose for our lives. Amen.
