TITHES AND COMMITMENT TO GOD By Major. Frank Materu
Key Scripture:
"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." – Malachi 3:10 (NIV)
1. Giving Beyond the Tithe:
Many believe that offering God ten percent is enough, yet God gave us His all, sacrificing His best for humanity.
Reflecting His generosity, we are called to give wholeheartedly—not just a portion but everything He asks of us.
Supporting Scripture:
- "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine." – Proverbs 3:9-10 (NIV)
- "Freely you have received; freely give."* – Matthew 10:8b (NIV)
Application:
Reevaluate your offerings. Are you giving God your best or just what’s convenient?
Surrender everything to Him, and He will be pleased with your sacrifice.
2. Fulfill Your Vows to God:
When making vows or promises to God, it is critical to follow through.
Many falter, forgetting the commitments they declared during moments of prayer or need.
God values integrity and rewards those who uphold their vows.
Supporting Scripture: -
"When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow." – Ecclesiastes 5:4 (NIV)
- "It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it." – Ecclesiastes 5:5 (NIV)
Application:
Reflect on the promises you've made to God. Have you honored them?
Faithfully fulfill your vows, and God will protect and guide you.
3. Avoid Separation from God:
The enemy seeks to disconnect God’s people from Him, depriving them of spiritual nourishment.
However, God desires constant communion with His people.
Trials and valleys often serve as tools to draw us closer to Him, equipping us to help others.
Supporting Scripture:
- "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." – Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
- "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." – Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Application:
Do not shy away from God during challenges. Use your experiences to guide others and draw strength from His presence.
4. Living by the Spirit:
True worship involves connecting with God in spirit and truth.
Many rely solely on religious practices without fostering a deep spiritual relationship.
God calls His people to draw near to Him, to experience His presence and partake of His blessings.
Supporting Scripture:
- "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." – John 4:24 (NIV)
-"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." – James 4:8a (NIV)
Application:
Spend time in prayer, worship, and meditating on God’s Word.
Seek to know Him deeply in spirit and truth, and He will reveal Himself to you.
5. Trust in God's Plan:
Rushing ahead of God’s timing leads to stress and failure.
Patience and trust in His plan yield peace and success.
God does not overload us with burdens but provides strength for every task He assigns.
Supporting Scripture:
- "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
- "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." – Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Application:
Evaluate your responsibilities. Are they aligned with God’s will?
Let Him guide your steps, and trust in His perfect timing.
Final Thought:
God calls us to live a life of surrender, faithfulness, and trust.
By giving generously, fulfilling our vows, drawing close to Him, and walking in patience, we honor Him and partake in His abundant blessings.
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” – Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
