CHURCH OR GRAVEYARD? By Major Frank Materu
Key Bible Scripture
"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks."
John 4:23
Introduction
Many gather in church buildings, yet their hearts remain far from God. Their conversations revolve around food, money, business, and personal problems, leaving no room for God in their midst. What is the purpose of such worship? God has given us the opportunity to worship Him in truth and Spirit—shouldn't we thank
Him for this gift? Imagine entering a city with majestic buildings but no inhabitants. The eerie silence raises questions about what drove people away.
This is the reality of many churches today. The structures stand tall, but God’s presence has departed, leaving emptiness behind. Such places become spiritual graveyards rather than houses of worship. But for those who truly seek God, He is alive and present among them, offering guidance, comfort, and eternal life.
The State of the Church
Empty Forms of Worship
God has left many churches because their worship has become lifeless and hollow. People gather for appearances and personal agendas rather than to seek God. These gatherings are devoid of life and power, turning churches into tombs.
"‘Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture!’ declares the Lord. ‘Therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend My people: Because you have scattered My flock and driven them away without attending to them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,’ declares the Lord."
Jeremiah 23:1-2
The Call to Remain Faithful
A Remnant in a Rebellious Generation
Despite living in a world filled with rebellion and wickedness, God is raising a holy remnant. These are people who will walk in righteousness, hunger for life, and reflect His glory.
Walking Through the Valley
Even in the darkest moments, God’s faithful ones will not fear, for He is with them.
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."
Psalm 23:4
God's Invitation
Fellowship with the Father
God is calling His people to return to Him. He stands at the door, knocking, waiting for those who will open their hearts and share fellowship with Him.
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me."
Revelation 3:20
Faith in Small Beginnings
God delights in small beginnings.
"Who dares despise the day of small things?"
Zechariah 4:10
The Weight of God’s Presence
Blessings and Accountability
When God places His presence among His people, they are blessed but also held accountable.
"The Lord's hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors."
1 Samuel 5:6
Conclusion
God desires true worshipers who will seek Him with all their hearts, worshiping in Spirit and truth. The choice is clear: remain in lifeless religion or embrace the life and fellowship God offers. Let us respond to His call, receive His life, and reflect His glory in a world desperate for hope and truth.
