GUIDELINES WILL KEEP YOU IN THE WAY By Major Frank Materu
Key Bible Scripture:
Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Introduction
In our journey of faith, God provides guidelines to keep us on the right path. These guidelines are not meant to constrain us but to protect us from the dangers of our own desires and to lead us into the fullness of His will. Many times, we are tempted to follow our own understanding and ignore God's instructions, but doing so can lead us down the path of destruction. This lesson calls us to embrace the guidance of the Lord, trusting that His way is always better than our own.
The Dangers of Following Your Own Understanding
In life, it's easy to rely on our own wisdom, thinking we know what is best. However, the Bible warns us that our understanding is limited, and without God's guidance, we are prone to wandering.
Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death."
When we reject God's guidelines, we are walking in the path of lawlessness, which ultimately leads to death. But when we adhere to His instructions, we experience life, peace, and the protection of His presence.
God's Guidelines Protect Us from Destruction
God’s guidelines are not a burden but a protection. They are designed to keep us safe from the temptations of the enemy and to guide us toward abundant life.
Psalm 119:105 declares, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
When we follow His guidelines, we are kept from falling into the traps set by the enemy. The enemy seeks to devour and destroy, but God's word is a shield that guards our hearts and minds.
The Importance of Gratitude and Praise
One of the most powerful tools God has given us is the ability to praise and thank Him. Praise is not just an expression of our feelings; it is a weapon against the enemy.
Psalm 22:3 says, "But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel."
When we praise God, we invite His presence into our lives, and the enemy is forced to flee. By choosing gratitude over complaint, we align ourselves with God’s will and open the door for His mercy and blessings to flow into our lives.
God Commands Praise and Thanksgiving
God not only encourages us to praise Him but commands it. Praise is a powerful weapon that can shift the atmosphere and bring victory in the battles we face.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."
When we choose to praise God, even in difficult circumstances, we are demonstrating our trust in Him and His sovereignty. This act of faith unlocks His blessings and strengthens us to face whatever comes our way.
The Spiritual Battle We Face
As believers, we are engaged in a spiritual battle, not a battle of flesh and blood. The enemy seeks to deceive and lead us astray, but God has equipped us with the tools we need to overcome.
Ephesians 6:11-12 says, "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world."
Our victory comes through the power of the Holy Spirit, not through our own efforts. Therefore, we must remain steadfast, relying on His guidance and trusting in His timing.
The Way of the Servant
In God’s kingdom, the path to greatness is through servanthood. Those who humble themselves and serve others will be exalted by God in due season.
Luke 14:11 says, "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
We are not to seek the kingdom through our own ambitions but by following the leading of the Holy Spirit. God will promote those who remain humble and faithful, even when it seems like others are advancing faster.
Summary
God’s guidelines are essential for living a victorious Christian life. They protect us from harm, lead us to fulfillment, and bring us closer to His will. Praise and thanksgiving are powerful tools that help us overcome the enemy and walk in victory. Let us not follow our own understanding but trust in God’s perfect wisdom. As we remain steadfast, humble, and obedient, we will experience His blessings and triumph in every battle.
Conclusion
God has given us clear guidelines to help us navigate through life. These guidelines are not burdensome but are for our protection and well-being. When we follow His way, we are guaranteed life and peace. Let us also remember the power of praise and thanksgiving, which are weapons that can turn our battles into victories. By trusting in God’s wisdom and remaining humble, we will see His glory manifest in our lives.
