TOO LATE! By Major Frank Materu
Key Scripture: Matthew 25:10-12 – "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘Open the door for us!’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’"

Introduction
Procrastination in spiritual matters is a dangerous trap that leads to eternal regret. Many live with the false assumption that they have time to turn to God, to repent, and to align their lives with His will. They indulge in sin and follow their selfish desires, thinking that God’s standards can be ignored without consequence. However, the Bible warns us repeatedly that there comes a point when it will be too late.
This lesson examines the tragedy of spiritual negligence and the peril of postponing obedience to God. It challenges us to examine our lives, to labor diligently for God’s Kingdom, and to avoid the delusion of living in self-centered disobedience. Let us take heed of God’s warning and live in readiness for His return.

The Danger of Spiritual Laziness
Proverbs 6:9-11 – "How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man."
Spiritual laziness is marked by complacency and a lack of commitment to God. Many claim to love God, yet their actions show otherwise. They prioritize their own desires over His commands and fail to labor for His Kingdom. This attitude leads to spiritual poverty, leaving them unprepared when the time comes to give an account before God.

The Deception of Self-Will
Proverbs 14:12 – "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death."
Living according to one’s own desires rather than God’s will is a path of deception. Many are led by the illusion of "their own way," unaware that they are actually following the schemes of demons. This self-centered lifestyle blinds them to the reality of their sin and leads to eternal separation from God. True freedom and purpose can only be found in surrendering to God’s will.

The Tragedy of Unrepentant Sin
Hebrews 10:26-27 – "If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God."
God calls us to genuine repentance, which means turning away from sin and walking in obedience. However, there are those who repeatedly return to their old sins, refusing to abandon them. Such behavior grieves God and leads to judgment. True repentance requires not just confession but transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit.

God’s Standards Are Eternal
Malachi 3:6 – "I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed."
God’s standards remain the same across all generations. While society may shift its moral compass, God’s expectations for righteousness and obedience are unchanging. Those who reject His standards in favor of worldly ways will face the consequences of their rebellion. It is a sobering reminder that God’s holiness cannot be compromised.

The Consequences of Waiting Too Long
Genesis 7:16-17 – "Then the Lord shut him in. For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased, they lifted the ark high above the earth."
Just as the flood came upon the earth and the ark’s door was shut, there will come a time when it is too late to turn to God. Those who procrastinate and reject His offer of salvation will find themselves unprepared when judgment comes. The opportunity to repent is now, while the door of grace is still open.

The Joy of Obedience to God
Psalm 100:2 – "Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs."
Serving God is not a burden but a privilege. When we choose to walk in obedience, we experience the joy of His presence and the fulfillment of His purpose in our lives. Obedience to God brings peace, hope, and assurance of eternal life. Let us embrace the privilege of serving Him with gratitude and dedication.
